Beta 1.2 Update

Hello! Welcome to the first of probably many balancing updates, after running a gauntlet of combats and gauging their gamefeel.

  • Weapons are no longer bespoke mechanical things. Instead, each Discipline has an Inflict Violence that reflects their martial art as well as denotes whether they are ranged, melee, physical, or melee. You use this when you Inflict Violence now. Weapons are now completely for flavor, and as we all know, flavor is important in the game as that is how you gain more Favor. Most Techniques have lost their weapon requirements. This also hammers in the martial art fantasy of "The wielder, not the weapon", which holds true in FMA (Filipino Martial Arts), where you are trained to use anything as a weapon.
The PDF has been updated across the board to reflect this.
  • In general, Techniques that have an Attack and an Effect take up 2 Actions, or if they are AOEs. If they only apply an Effect or only make an Attack, they then are just 1 Action. This helps in reducing a "wasted turn" feel.
  • A number of Disciplines have been given updated Techniques, balanced to usefulness, check yours out.
  • Some Forbidden Techniques that have heavy consequences as Favor 2 augments have had their base abilities boosted, and a section on Forbidden Techniques explain that they are mostly for flavor and are meant to be used in important character moments, etc. Other Favor 2 Augments have been scaled down to only inflict Incapacitated instead of straight up death.
  • Foes now have at least 2 Techniques at Tier 1.
  • Each Foe Role now has innate Attack traits.
  • Conditions have been split into Positive and Negative Conditions
    • Strengthen is a new Positive Condition. Strengthen: When you roll damage dice, roll 2 and choose the higher result. This intensifies into Bolster, which is roll 3 and take highest.
    • Weaken has been changed to dealing half damage. Debilitate deals half damage and removes benefit from extra damage.
    • Hinder now stops you from using Reactions in general.
    • Quiet now stops you from using Techniques. Disease now also inflicts a -1 to saves.
    • Unbalance now also pushes you 1 space if you are hit.
    • Petrified now removes the ability to use Actions and Reactions.
    • Obfuscate and Obscured have been turned into Negative Conditions. Obfuscate grants -1 to all attacks, while Obscured makes it so that you can only target adjacent combatants.
    • Precise and Blur now just give +2 and -2 to the Violence Roll, respectively.

That's it for now. Thank you all for sticking around!
