[0.8.5]「Prove your conviction.」

Ohoy Kadungganan!

A quick update today, with the following changes.

0.8.5 Changelog

Clarified the Casting Status (5-8 is keep Casting, etc. Must Focus Sorcery to keep Casting)

Fixed Style Abilities table!

Tweaked Foes a bit more! Accuracy is higher, while Mettle is lower, making for faster yet just as intense encounters.

Each Role now has a "Role Flourish" and a Role Miss Trigger" that all Foes of those Roles can perform.

Discipline Tweaks

Each Discipline has been updated, with all Techniques revamped to have a different writing style as opposed to the previous one, although Mechanics are largely unchanged. This is to make each Technique a bespoke rules widget, with all the mechanics needed to know about the Technique within the Technique itself, except for ranges, conditions and the like.

Check your Discipline, they have cool Technique names now! For example, Paraputli Techniques are known as Gleaming Exorcist Arts, Violent Sonat Techniques are known as Sword Saint Psalms, and more!

Devlog: I was inspired by the super evocative little writing pieces of my friend Lilah (@nightmare_works) and wanted to go the other way of how tactical combat games are going: rather than the 4e style of mechanics divorced from the fluff or lore, I just more or less put them together, with the effect line of the Technique describing what the Technique actually looks like in the fiction, to lend it even more to visualizing the tactical violence going on in the game. This has been pretty good at changing the paradigm of my players into being a lot more fiction first. Combined with the Favor system, it has made for some pretty involved combats, which can get long because players are really getting into what their Kadungganan are doing. This directly feeds into my design goal of Violence being narrative. Instead of the narrative sort of "taking a backseat" when combat erupts as in other games I've played (other then FitD or PbtA), when violence erupts in Gubat Banwa, it directly comes from the fiction and has a narrative of its own, and is an avenue for players to express their creativity and action chops, as well as representing their characters turmoils and personality through the choices, actions, and attacks they perform while in combat. This is particularly something I took up from after watching RWBY and realizing why the later volume's fight scenes don't do it for me: Monty was really good at telling a story through fights. I mean... look at Dead Fantasy.

Be sure to check out your Discipline!

Auxiliary Changes:

  • Fixed instances of Juggled, clarified their durations.
  • Fix B (page 23)
  • Described the Mandala heads' majesty.

That's it for now, enjoy some new art from rmbananas!
